Malaya Movement in Canada

Duterte Lockdown Anniversary

Joint Statement by Malaya Movement US, Canada and Melbourne (Australia).

We in the Malaya Movement join the Filipino people in calling for Duterte’s immediate resignation. It is just and appropriate for the Filipino people to demand the immediate resignation of a failed and incompetent president. Every single day that Duterte stays in office means more suffering to the Filipino people under the same incoherent and incompetent leadership.

STOP the Death Threats Against Rights Defenders in Negros!

We fear that the most recent killings of Filipino peace and peasant rights activist Randall Echanis and that of human rights and community health worker Zara Alvarez by suspected agents of the Philippine military just a couple of weeks apart are not the last under the undeclared martial law regime of President Rodrigo Duterte. Malaya Movement Canada expresses its gravest concerns and its angry condemnation of the continuing death threats against the human rights defenders in Negros.

Justice for Zara Alvarez and all the Victims of Extrajudicial Killings in the Philippines!

Malaya Movement Canada strongly and vigorously condemns the killing of Zara Alvarez last August 17, 2020 in Bacolod City. Zara Alvarez was a young and dedicated human rights activist, a human rights educator and paralegal for the human rights group in Negros Island, central Philippines. She also worked as advocacy officer of the Negros Island Health Integrated Program. She was red-tagged because of her activism work and was included in a government and military “terror list” of 600+ individuals and in 2013, Alvarez was arrested on trumped up charges and detained for almost two years.

Filipinos in Canada Denounce Anti-Terrorism Law

Malaya Movement Canada expresses its opposition to the newly approved version of the Human Security Act of 2007 also known as Senate Bill 1083 or the Anti-Terrorism Law, authored and sponsored by Senator Panfilo Lacson. This anti-terrorism bill is designed to bring a chilling effect and serve as harassment to dissenters, activists and rights defenders and advocates.
